Brazilian Air Force Deploys KC-390 for Arson Response in São Paulo

By: David Simmons

The Brazilian Air Force (FAB) has dispatched one of its Embraer KC-390 Millennium aircraft to São Paulo to assist in combating a series of intentional fires. The aircraft, equipped with the MAFFS II (Modular Airborne Firefighting System), arrived in Ribeirão Preto on Sunday. However, dense smoke from the fires prevented immediate action.

Authorities are currently investigating the arson incidents, though the exact motivations remain unclear. There is speculation that criminal organizations may be behind the fires.

The KC-390 is specially outfitted with the MAFFS II system, which allows it to carry and disperse approximately 12,000 liters of water per pass through launchers installed on its side doors. This versatile aircraft has previously been utilized in firefighting efforts, including operations in the Pantanal region during June and July, helping protect one of South America’s vital ecosystems.

“The KC-390’s deployment in the Ribeirão Preto region will continue for an indefinite period. The FAB is fully committed to reducing the impact of these fires on the local population,” stated Lieutenant Colonel Bruno Américo Pereira, Commander of the 1st Troop Transport Group.
