And while they’re great to watch videos of the drops in action, it’s hard to see just how effective the retardant can be in extinguishing devastating wildfires.

That’s why CalFire released this video showing a plane dropping 9,000 pounds of flame retardant on an old Ford Explorer, showing the sheer force of the drop along with the pin-point accuracy the planes deploy.

MAFFS KC-390 currently flying missions in Pantanal, Brazil. A aeronave do Esquadrão Zeus está operando a partir de Corumbá (MS). O KC-390 usa o Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System II (MAFFS II), um equipamento fabricado nos Estados Unidos, para despejar até 12 mil litros d’água sobre as queimadas que assolam o bioma.

Só neste sábado (segundo vídeo) foram quatro voos, totalizando o lançamento de 48 mil litros d’água e 2:55 horas de voo na operação.

Desde o início deste ano, mais de 688 mil hectares foram queimados no Pantanal, cerca de 4,5% do bioma, segundo dados da UFRJ. A maior parte dos focos está na região de Corumbá, que concentra 66% das ocorrências.
